Hachinohe Institute of Technology (HIT) promotes technological advances and environmental and energy sustainability in the northern Tohoku region through its provision of higher-education programs, its research programs, and its outreach programs.
Since its establishment in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, in 1972, HIT has promoted technological innovation and cutting-edge design through its well-organized education system and its advanced research achievements, thereby becoming one of Japan’s leading undergraduate and postgraduate institutions.
In close cooperation with some of the world’s top universities and our regional community partners, including local governmental organizations, we will continue to contribute to the development of technology and design.
HIT traces its history back to the establishment of a technical high school in Hachinohe in 1956. Since Hachinohe fishing port is a major fishery base, the high school was established to produce maritime radio operators for pelagic fishery. Fifteen years after its establishment, the school’s board of trustees decided to make the school an institute for higher education so as to enhance its contribution to the region.
Outstanding engineering technologies created by engineers of outstanding character. The educational philosophy of Hachinohe Institute of Technology (HIT) is based on this motto, and we strive to produce ethical engineers who have a keen sense of judgment, rich humanity and a highly specialized knowledge of science and technology. In order to realize our educational and research goals, we have implemented the three educational policies described below.
Based on the above-mentioned vision and an unwavering commitment to integrity, HIT sees its mission as a center of excellence as being to provide students with a superior education; to advance the frontiers of knowledge in the academic fields it specializes in; to contribute to the Tohoku region through the education it provides and the research it conducts; and to promote happiness for all through the promotion of science and technology.
We welcome all students who share our vision, are interested in our mission, have a desire to improve themselves at our institution, and have a basic knowledge of the main subjects offered at their high schools. International students are also more than welcome. For an admission of these students, we have conducted the multiple application systems. The entrance examination will be administered to see three elements of the academic ability such as “knowledge and common skills”, “ability to think, judge and express”, “initiative, diversity and cooperation”. Academic ability of applicants meeting the educational objective for human resources development of each departments is holistically evaluated on combining a written examination, a short essay, an interview and so on.
We have determined the following outline of the curriculum policy at HIT to educate students attaining the qualification which is listed on the diploma policy at HIT.
The achievement degree of the learning outcomes is assessed against some acquisition benchmarks formulated from the diploma policy at HIT and the students are enable to self-monitor it. It has considered so that students is to be able to reflect its outcomes.
We give an undergraduate degree to a student if she or he has finished the required curriculum determined based on above-mentioned vision and has obtained the qualification and academic ability described below.
One of the major educational advantages in HIT is continuous faculty development activity. The following two educational programs in HIT have been authorized by JABEE (Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education).
JABEE is a non-governmental organization which evaluates and accredits engineering educational programs. JABEE accreditation criteria conform to the principle of international framework of program accreditation such as Washington Accord. Therefore, accredited programs are internationally recognized as substantially equivalent.
