1. Energy Engineering Education Project |
HIT has been playing an important role in the energy and environmental education in Tohoku district since 1982, when it founded the Department of Energy Engineering which was recently reformed into the Department of Chemical Engineering on Biological Environment. In 2002, HIT was designated, by The Information Center for Energy and Environment Education, as one of the 14 core colleges for the research of energy education. This designation forms a part of an administrative project by Agency for Natural Resources and Energy to support the promotion of the energy engineering education in local areas. With this governmental support, HIT will provide the students and citizens with more opportunities to study practical energy engineering.

| 2. Research Project for Industrial Waste Treatment and Management Technologies |
Several years ago massive illegal disposal of industrial waste was found in the boundary area between Iwate and Aomori prefectures. Recently it was revealed to be one of the most large-scale dumping cases in Japan. In February 2003, HIT started a new project to research comprehensive monitoring, treatment, and management technologies for the industrial waste. We had asked a financial support of MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), and in April, 2003, it decided to grant a state subsidy for 5 years. The total amount of the administrative support will be several hundreds million yen. In order to promote this big project, we established Research Center for Sustainable Society System, the staff of which consists of professors from all the departments of our graduate school. HIT has developed a remote sensing system using NASA's earth observing satellites. We are now expected to play a key role to solve this environmental problem.

| 3. Promotion Project for the Cooperation of Innovative Technology and Advanced Research in Evolutional Area |
Since 2002, MEXT has been promoting the Cooperation of Innovative Technology and Advanced Research in Evolutional Area (CITY AREA). This R&D scheme focuses on the development of new technology, attaching importance to the independence of local governments and the exertion of local individuality. The research theme of Hachinohe area and HIT is a high utilization system of recycled energy. The three-year governmental investment for this project will be one hundred million yen annually. HIT is now developing recycling system of low temperature energy and gasification of wood biomass in close cooperation with local companies. The research result is expected to increase business' chance for companies in this area.

| 4. Promotion Project for the Collaboration of Regional Entities for the Advancement of Technological Excellence |
MEXT and Japan Science and Technology Agency have been promoting Aomori Collaboration of Regional Entities for the Advancement of Technological Excellence, CREATE, since 2001. It is a kind of R&D project in which each of the Japanese regional governments such as prefectures and cities contributes to the creation of new technologies and industries. In this framework, with the help and support of Aomori Prefecture and Japanese government which includes fifteen hundred million yen investment for five years, HIT is now developing a high-speed LCD display system for the creation of high performance display devices in cooperation with several universities, and has succeeded in manufacturing a trial product of the field sequential liquid crystal display. After the completion of the research, the theme will be taken over and developed further by organizations and researchers who have participated in this project thus enabling them to make further use of the research results. |
